Izell

There was a flaw in all this, and she saw it the moment they appeared in a shadowy corner of what she hoped was the Lust level of Hell.

They had no idea where they were.

Smoke shrouded the sky in place of clouds, and the air hung stale with no wind to speak of. Jaromir had probably gotten them close to the palace, but in the murk, she couldn’t see further than a few feet in front of her face. And she’d thought Adrun was dark! There was a difference between eternal night and the smog-filled atmosphere they’d entered.

At least she understood why her imp illusion had such big ears and no nostrils. The lingering smell of sulfur and something sickly sweet assaulted her nose under the glamor, and she fought off a gag.

“I hear real imps. That way.” Queldian pointed to their left. She shrugged, starting to head in that direction. Maybe they could infiltrate amongst these creatures and get led right to the palace. She had every intention of going straight to Lilith, wherever the Queen of Lust might be, hit her with a sleeping spell, and drag her back to Heaven. Demon and Key all in one neat package. They could be done in hours.

“Gods, that smell,” she muttered. While she knew Hell was a place of punishment, it didn’t have to punish her nose with the added odor of offal as they approached the screeching tones of a pack of real imps.

A roll of smoke parted, revealing a brick-red imp with one horn curled an extra foot up from its head. The other had been lopped off by a clumsy hand, leaving a lumpy scar in the patch of missing skull over its brow.

“Lazies!” it screeched, facing them with its bat-like ears cocked forward. Izell could tell it didn’t sense them with its eyes, which were glazed and sunken from disuse.

Still, she startled back at the sudden scream of its tone. She hadn’t sensed it until they were right on top of it. Who knew what else lurked nearby, hidden by smoke and odor?

“Lazies help with feast. Now!” Orange-red flames licked its palms, illuminating a many-legged silhouette of a small legion of stick-like imps hauling a limp corpse. It was shaped like a cow, with at least four horns too many.

“Smells like a farm nearby,” Sondus commented in her head. Since his voice carried a dull echo, she figured he had connected a thread of Mind magic so they could all communicate mentally.

“Where do you think the feast is?” Lyana asked. She was the first to move to the corpse, adding herself to the group hefting it.

“A place we need to be. Don’t try too hard, by the way, it seems these imps are pretty weak,” Izell remarked. She supported the head by one horn so it wouldn’t drag in the dirt. The moment the dragons helped too, the load lifted, and she held her breath, hoping none of these little demons noticed.

The taskmaster imp extinguished its
